Event Details

This event requires registration through Hands On Greater Richmond: HandsOn Greater Richmond | Pony Pasture Invasive Plant Management & Habitat Restoration (handsonrva.org)

Help restore habitat at Pony Pasture!

Volunteers will assist with removal of invasive plant species in different areas of Pony Pasture (activity and site will vary and depend on conditions):

  • Rapids Restoration Area near parking lot & boat launch,
  • Rockfalls Creek near entrance & bathroom facility, or
  • Riverside Trail

This summer we are focusing on removing invasive vine cover along Rockfalls Creek near the park entrance.  This protects the abundant and diverse species of mature trees, allows native plants to get the resources they need to thrive, and improves stream habitat.

This effort supports the mission of the JRPS Invasive Plant Task Force .

No special experience or skills required.  Work gloves and tools are provided.

Please arrive on time for orientation and commit to working for at least one hour. Appropriate clothing (see below) is to protect you from poison ivy and other possible hazards.

Do not trust your GPS! Address is 7300 Riverside Drive.  From Forest Hill Avenue, take Hathaway which becomes Longview. One mile to intersection with Rockfalls Drive. Turn RIGHT on Rockfalls, LEFT at traffic circle, and RIGHT into parking lot.

VOLUNTEERS MUST:

  • Wear long pants/socks that cover the ankles, long sleeves, and sturdy closed-toe shoes or boots. Leggings are discouraged.
  • Bring a water bottle.

Sunscreen and insect repellant recommended.
MEET UP:  will depend on activity & site. Please look for project leader near bridge to bathroom facility, at the sign kiosk near the rapids, or at the trailhead at the end of the parking lot closest to the picnic tables.   Text or call 804-629-1229 if you do not see your project leader.
