FOJRP Annual Picnic Sunday May 22nd

We sure hope you can attend our annual potluck picnic (moved from June) Sunday, May 22nd from 4-6 p.m. at Forest Hill Park (shelter #1). We'll have live music from the James River Ramblers, River Heroes recognition, door prizes--including a raft trip for 2 from Riverside Outfitters, license plate applications, games, and a nature talk by our own Anne Wright.

We provide fried chicken and beverages and you bring a side dish or dessert to share. There will be fun and games for all! And yes, it's a little embarrassing to have our picnic outside of the JRPS, but Pumphouse Rd. is impassable, so we'll see you at lovely Forest Hill Park--which does have trails that connect to JRPS. At 6 p.m. Forest Hill Park's music series kicks off with the No B.S. Brass Band performing, so stick around for a great afternoon and evening of outdoor fun. Here is all the picnic info. Hope you can make it!

Phew! 2012 Park Budget Uncut
Well, that was stressful last week, but thanks so much to everyone who emailed and called and mobilized online to make it clear to City Council that cutting the Dept. of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities budget and the JRPS budget within it was not in the best interests of the city and its citizens. Point well-taken! Council voted down Mr. Jewell's drastic proposal last Friday afternoon after getting many, many emails etc. from park-lovers. Nicely done, folks!

Special thanks go to FOJRP Board members Molly Dellinger-Wray and Gay Leahy for jumping into action and to FOJRP members Stephanie Saccone and Susan Martin, owners of webbones, who got the word out quickly on our web site and through Constant Contact. webbones donates two hours of time to FOJRP every month to help us keep our website current, and it has made a tremendous difference in our outreach--and our budget!
To The River N Back Monday, May 30th
Super-involved FOJRP member Phil Riggan, he of the James River News Hub, floated the idea of a To The River and Back bus in the summer, and we went with the flow and have contracted with the To the Bottom and Back bus people to try out a bus route (similar, yet streamlined version of the To the Museums and Back route that coincided with VMFA's Picasso exhibit) that might help alleviate summer weekend parking troubles at Tredegar St. due to Belle Isle's popularity. Our plan is to fund two buses the Monday of Memorial Day Weekend (the most crowded day typically) from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. as a trial and see what makes sense from there. Riding the bus is free though donations to 2BNB are accepted. FOJRP cannot take on regular funding of this route alone, but if it works, we will work to secure funding for more.

 Clean-ups May 21st & June 11th
Our quarterly clean-up along Riverside Drive from Pony Pasture to Huguenot Flatwater is this Saturday, May 21st from 10-noon. We have one large group coming, but feel free to join in. We meet at Pony Pasture parking lot. Please bring gloves and trash bags.

Remember, the big JRAC-sponsored James River clean-up Saturday, June 11th has two JRPS locations, Reedy Creek and Pony Pasture. Dedicated FOJRP member Stephanie Saccone and helpers run the Reedy Creek section for us, including whipping up lunch for volunteers. The equally devoted Lynda Richardson and Mike Ostrander run the Pony Pasture one. Doesn't matter where you help, the river and park will be the better for your time and efforts. Sign up here to help from 9-1: James River clean-up

Basking in Baskervill's Generosity
Our hearty thanks go out to the folks at Baskervill in Shockoe Bottom who donated funds leftover from their Earth Month event, ReClaim It!, to FOJRP recently. JRPS Manager Ralph White and FOJRP president Maureen Egan received the giant check earlier this month. Their month-long activities included wildly successful Electronics and Construction Materials recycling events, a Rain Barrel workshop, a clean up of the Pipeline area of the park and much more. Thanks to them and their sponsors:
Baskervill
Thomas Mazich, Bob Clark, Maureen Egan and Ralph White with a big check!
