Help Expand the Park!

Hello Friends of the James River Park

We have an immediate opportunity to expand the Park, and we need you to help us make it happen! Our partners at Capital Region Land Conservancy have been working for a long time to close this deal, and they need our help to get it done.

The available parcel is a 4.5-acre piece of land, known as the Brander Street Property, that sits between Ancarrow’s Landing and I-95. It stretches from the river to Brander Street and it straddles the Railroad Tracks in that area. Most importantly this piece of land houses a large stretch of the Richmond Slave Trail, which up until this land purchase has not technically been a part of the James River Park System.

This land purchase would guarantee the permanence of the Richmond Slave Trail and allow the City to complete major upgrades to this important piece of cultural heritage. It would also permanently add the land to the conservation easement and the JRPS.

This is a rare chance for us to protect, expand, and enhance the James River Park System all in one shot. Part of the purchase is being paid for through a grant from the Virginia Land Conservation Fund. The remaining portion of the purchase that we need to help raise funds for is $60,000.

FOJRP has committed to a $30,000 challenge grant to help close the remaining funding gap. That means we will provide a $30,000 match to all gifts given by the public. If you give $100, we give $100. If you give $1,000, we give $1,000 until the full $60,000 goal is met.

Donations can be made at https://app.etapestry.com/onlineforms/CapitalRegionLandConservanc/SlaveTrail.html .

We are providing this matching grant through our Protection and Preservation fund, which is a designated fund we maintain that is restricted for land purchases. Making this contribution does not disrupt any of our planned spending for this budget cycle.

Opportunities to increase the Park are rare, and we need to strike while the iron is hot.

See you in the Park.
