2014 River Heroes
The Friends of the James River Park and our co-sponsors are pleased and proud to announce that Ralph White and Rich Young are our 2014 River Heroes!
Our Heroes, Ralph White and Rich Young, with FOJRP board member Betsy Slade in the background.
Nominations for this year's James River Park's River Hero Award made the job of the selection committee very tough. The committee is made up of former River Heroes.
About Ralph White:
Ralph needs no introduction to those familiar with James River Park. In his 25+ years as park manager, Ralph made James River Park a national model for other urban wilderness parks, and managed countless volunteers.
Ralph recently received The Garden Club of America's Francis K Hutchinson Medal "awarded to figures of national importance for distinguished service in conservation" and in 2006 received the national Sierra Club's award for Distinguished Service. Ralph was ineligible for the award in the past because of his place on the FOJRP Board.
About Rich Young:
If a picture paints a thousand words, Rich Young has said millions. Rich is known to be most gracious with his photos. If you are one of his 500 friends of Facebook, you are familiar with Rich's pictures of river scenes, activities, people, flora and fauna.
What many do not know about RIch is that he has been involved as a volunteer at James River Park for over 20 years and participated in innumerable projects of all sorts. Whether it's building a structure, promoting an event or helping to educate park users about an issue, RIch has quietly lent a hand to vastly improve, enhance, and champion James River Park. He has also assisted hundreds of people in safely paddling the river in canoes or kayaks.
We'd also like to thank everyone who took the time to write up a nomination and our hard-working selection committee. Thanks also to our cosponsors, The Galley Restaurant, Real Richmond Food Tours & More, Once Upon a Vine, Riverside Outfitters, TaZa Coffee 'n Creme, Golden Squeegee Imprinted Sportswear & Embroidery and Critter Town Bath House for their generous support.
About the River Hero Award
With this annual event, the Friends of the James River Park hope to bring attention to the magnificent, scenic river that runs through Richmond and to those who have worked to make the James River a better place for both people and wildlife.
No award was made in 2013.
