CLIMBING AT THE JAMES RIVER PARK

Richmond is one of the few cities that permits rock climbing inside the corporate limits. Two areas are especially popular: the Manchester Wall and the Belle Isle Quarry.

MANCHESTER CLIMBING WALLS

This is the shoreline remnant of the 1830's Richmond and Petersburg Railroad bridge. A path has been made up the side of the wall allowing you to reach the top to set up belay points. There are also three pilings in the river that are available for climbing. The climbs here range from beginner to expert and offer a wide variety of routes up the walls and pilings. The pilings also offer a good place to boulder.

BELLE ISLE QUARRY

There are many different areas on Belle Isle where you can climb. As you follow the path along the north side of the island; you will come to a rock face about midway, with climbs ranging in difficulty from beginner to expert levels. A path leads up around the face to the top where belay points can be set up. Another good place to climb on Belle Isle is on the east side of the quarry. There is a path here that leads to the top of the quarry as well. There are all different levels of difficulty at this site as well.
